Riverside Theatres Presents A Neil Gooding Productions & Amazon Woman Enterprises Production
Starring Queenie van de Zandt

In Blue, Queenie, renowned for her artful storytelling and raw, emotive vocals, explores the songs, stories and art of the musical legend that is Joni Mitchell.

Renaissance woman, painter and poet, Mitchell created a soundtrack for the Woodstock generation. “Joni is my favourite singer/songwriter and I’ve been wanting to do a show about her and her music for some time,” said Queenie. “She gave a daughter up for adoption early in her career and her music was so influenced by this experience. Having given birth to a daughter myself in 2017, it felt like a perfect time to explore this mother and daughter relationship and the effect that becoming a parent has on your creativity.”

In Blue: The Songs of Joni Mitchell, Queenie, along with a live band, explores her love of all things Joni – affectionately reinterpreting Joni Mitchell’s melancholy music, and intimately revealing the stories behind some of her most haunting songs such as A Case of You, Both Sides Now and Little Green.

Following rave reviews, and sell-out performances at the Queensland and Melbourne Cabaret Festivals and Sydney’s Hayes Theatre, Blue: The Songs of Joni Mitchell, has continued its success touring Australia and the US. Along the way it won 3 prestigious theatre awards and a Helpmann Award nomination for Best Cabaret Performer and the Sydney Theatre Award for Best Cabaret Production.

Blue: The Songs of Joni Mitchell, is a beguiling night of melancholic songs, poetic storytelling and haunting vocals in a perfect intimate setting.

Downstairs at the Maj, Perth, 2018
“★★★★…to write a musical story with such sincere heartfelt emotion and have the audience spellbound for one hour, now that takes some serious ‘star power’…it was the amazing ‘star power’ voice of Van de Zandt that filled the room and made Mitchell’s poetic song writing skills come alive…A memorable night by two of the best in the business, highly recommended!” –

Adelaide Cabaret Festival, 2018
“…in Blue: The Songs of Joni Mitchell, Australia’s own Queenie van de Zandt pays an honest, affectionate tribute to a genuine musical icon…The music is glorious, and the performances both vocally, and from the tight-as-a-drum trio under Max Lambert’s confident hand, give them plenty of room to fly…wonderful music and a great singer.” – The Advertiser

Hayes Theatre Co, Sydney, 2017
“★★★★☆ A beguiling night of melancholic songs, poetic storytelling and haunting vocals…perfect intimate setting…incredible empathy and emotion…all beautifully sung with a lovely subtle restraint. Best of all are deeply felt, exquisitely performed renditions of Case of Youand Both Sides Now…Lambert provides wonderfully sensitive accompaniment on the piano…In another stand-out moment van de Zandtsings For Free acapella.Van de Zandt and Lambert have crafted a gently melancholic, poetic show that can speak to anyone regardless of whether you know the material, but fans of Mitchell’s music will find it particularly appealing.” – Limelight Magazine

The Q, Queanbeyan, 2018
“…van de Zandt’s natural wit and engagement with the audience…drew us in…interpreting Mitchell’s songs with originality and flair but highlighting moments in her own way, van de Zandt used her voice perhaps as versatilely as Mitchell herself. And equally impressive were her fellow musicians, shining in the beautiful arrangements…The presentation was seamless; the music, easy on the ears; the evening, a splendid tribute to an icon of enlightened creative freedom.” – Stage Whispers

Melbourne Cabaret Festival, Chapel off Chapel, 2017
…brilliantly put together cabaret…it is breath-taking…Van de Zandt connects Mitchell’s life and work effortlessly and at times heartbreakingly…(she) knows how to connect with an audience and more than that, how to deal with one… this show is so well constructed and performed… Van de Zandt…takes your breath away with her story telling and her voice – so pure it rattles your composure… Everything about the show is good. If you’re a Joni Mitchell fan you won’t be disappointed and you will become a Queenie van de Zandt fan, it’s impossible not to be. Brilliant.” – Liddy Clark, Stage Noise
