A healing ritual. A summoning of the dead. A dance eisteddfod where the first prize is forgiveness.

Riverside Presents
A Loved Woman
By Emma Maye Gibson & Karmyn Gibson
Produced by Performing Lines in association with Griffin Theatre Company
Co-commissioned by Sydney Festival and Riverside Theatres

Emma Maye Gibson (aka Betty Grumble) is an internationally lauded performance artist-slash-sex clown, who has traveled the world stripping off her clothes and doing unprintable things in front of tens of thousands of people.

Karmyn Gibson is her mother. A former bodybuilding champion and national aerobics title-holder, who has some strong opinions about what her daughter does for a living.

So, naturally, they’ve decided to make a show together.

In A Loved Woman, Emma Maye and Karmyn reckon with their own complex history – and a fractured lineage of mother-daughter relationships, stretching back through their family. Ballet leotards stretched over bruises. Smashed dinner plates. Teenage runaways pulled into cop cars. A Loved Woman asks what we inherit from our mothers, what we pass on to our daughters, and whether two generations of women can find a way to forgive.
