Riz is a uniquely Western Sydney coming-of-age film based on true events.
It tells the story of an intelligent and compassionate teenager who excels at school, is about to be the first in his family to go to university and seems destined for great things.
He has led his mates off the streets and away from crime but, on the eve of his 18th birthday, he faces betraying them to preserve a secret second life. His dilemma exposes the economic and cultural divisions across our “global city” in a way rarely seen in Australian cinema.
Selected for the 2015 Sydney Film Festival, Riz is the debut feature from CuriousWorks, a western suburbs based arts company committed to sharing the largely untold stories of the region’s multicultural communities.
This special screening includes Kurinji performing the score live and a Q&A with the film’s directors.
“Its value is in telling what feels like an authentic multicultural story from the western suburbs about class, friendship and opportunity … Riz taps into a community that is not often seen in Australian films and and gives new talent a chance.” – Garry Maddox, Sydney Morning Herald
