Through Our Lens is a festival of two short plays specially created for Adakar Theatre and Cultural Group by emerging South Asian playwrights bringing their diverse perspective and original stories under the artistic direction of Saba Zaidi Abdi.

Packing

Chasing his dreams Deepak arrives in Australia in search of a better life, leaving his world behind.  But all dreams do not come true. In ten long years he struggle to put the shattered fragments of his life together and in the process loses many precious years, loving moments and relationships. He somehow obtains permanent residence which comes back to haunt him. He questions the validity of his choices when life confronts him with a new challenge.

Mangalsutra

Set against two marriages, the play explores the relationship between love, denial and traditions. As they look for identity and belonging, the three generations of women struggle with their unconscious prejudices, the desire to be loved and their choices to be accepted. The play deals with the fears and mistrust we perpetuate as multiple cultures, races and faiths are blended.

About Adakar Theatre and Cultural Group

Operating since 2014, Adakar is not for profit Theatre and Cultural Group providing a platform for the South Asian creatives to showcase the best of their talent. In search of new stories and diverse perspectives, Adakar launched a script writing competition Through Our Lens in January 2023. The two winning scripts about the inter- generational Australia have been selected to feature in Through our Lens. These original and unique plays are presented by an all-inclusive team of writers, directors, actors, producer and creatives from all walks of life.
