When a lay preacher arrives at a British settlement in 1830s New Zealand, his violent past is drawn into question and his faith put to the test as he finds himself caught in the middle of a bloody war between Māori tribes.

In 1830s New Zealand, the world is dominated by tribal conflicts among the Māori people.

Lay preacher Thomas Munro seeks redemption and arrives at the British settlement of Epworth. Caught in a battle between Māori tribes, he saves the daughter of a rival chief. Munro faces racism and realises he’s merely a symbol of civilisation.

When a murder occurs, he and Rangimai journey into forbidden lands to seek justice, only to find themselves entangled in a power struggle. Munro must confront his beliefs and decide his role in the impending tribal war.
