We’ve all seen her, the hula girl swinging from the dashboard, the sultry South Seas siren smiling languidly in postcards, and the alluring topless native belle telling you to come to the ”friendly Islands.”

MYTHS AND MAIDENS explores the impact of the colonial gaze on “native beauty” through the ages, and looks at how the idea of beauty is being re-defined in the Moana. Through interviews and historical tropes and imagery, get ready to go down a rabbit hole of reality that is far removed from this postcard of paradise.
