Howard, an unwillingly retired sea captain, withers in his isolation. When his daughter Grace hires Annie as housekeeper, he reacts with contempt and fires her as soon as he gets the chance. But realizing he misbehaved, he asks her to come back.
Meanwhile, Grace ´s life gets out of a balance. Her husband Martin wants to divorce and sell the apartment, and she’s about to lose her job at the hospital. Grace tells Annie she has applied for Howard to stay at a home for the elderly. Annie is shocked. When she tells Grace ´s plans to Howard, he asks Annie to move in with him. She is overwhelmingly happy, but demands Howard to tell Grace. Howard and Annie reveal their past for each other. Annie had an abusive husband that she left. Howard loved his wife Elaine and Grace dearly, but he had a longing to be at sea rather than at home. Grace’s childhood affection for him turned to accusations. Shortly after Grace finally grew up and left home, Elaine drowned. She needed his support but he only had resentment for her.
