Thursday 15 August! The Prize is back for its eighth year – the magic of live theatre and empowerment of the democratic vote!
The annual Martin-Lysicrates Prize is a free, not-for-profit playwriting competition that celebrates the best new Australian writing in theatre for young people. Inspired by the Great Dionysia Ancient Greek theatre festivals, The Martin Lysicrates Prize honours past tradition and today’s young people by weaving democratic ideals and new cultural experiences together!
How does it work?
The students sit and watch the first ten minutes of our three finalist plays written by accomplished Australian playwrights. They are asked to judge for themselves which one of the three plays they want to see finished. The play with the most votes will win a $15,000 commission.
The Martin-Lysicrates Prize winner is chosen not by a panel of grown-ups, or an adult expert, but by the votes of the kids themselves. Showcasing Australian work especially written for 11-14 year olds. Students shout, laugh, stamp their feet, wave their arms and then, they cast possibly
their first ever democratic vote to decide which play should win the $15,000 Martin-Lysicrates Prize.
The best part: tickets to the Martin-Lysicrates Prize are free!
