By exploring Andy Warhol’s enigmatic persona and his deep-rooted family ties, this documentary reveals unseen aspects of the life and inspiration of this iconic artist.
Viewers are drawn into Warhol’s world through intimate interviews and authentic materials, from his roots in Slovakia to his transformative years in New York City. With previously unseen material and fresh perspectives, the film sheds new light on Warhol’s introspective nature and his profound influence on art and culture.
The film begins where other films about Andy Warhol tend to end, exploring Andy’s famous quote “I come from nowhere”, which we perceive as a certain camouflage behind which he hid his unique inspiration. He had a rich emotional and spiritual background in his mother and ancestral roots.
Andy presented himself as an extravagant artist, the author of provocative works. At the same time, his nature was introverted, melancholic and even withdrawn. Social events took place in his Factory, but he only watched extraordinary moments and ordinary life from afar. He looked for objects for his art everywhere and he created the original out of the ordinary.
The creators of the documentary found an unexplored territory of deep family relationships within Warhol’s family. Andy’s story is told by people whose statements have never been recorded, and the film contains a lot of authentic material on topics that no one has investigated to this day. A new perspective and unknown facts will be an attraction not only for all Warhol admirers, but also for ordinary viewers.
Part of the film was shot in the country of origin of Andy’s parents, today’s Slovakia, where Byzantine Catholicism used to be strongly rooted. Religion and faith have intensively intertwined with Andy ́s life and art, as we can see through the works and interviews with historians and family members. Equally interesting are the shots from his birthplace in Pittsburgh, from his years spent at the Carnegie Tech University, or his first house in New York. The authors filmed at the place where he became a victim of an assassination attempt, the hospital where he died suddenly years later, the cathedral of his last farewell or the final resting place in Pittsburgh.
The documentary was created thanks to the support of the Andy Warhol family, who provided materials and other artifacts, Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, and the museum of Andy Warhol in Medzilaborce, Slovakia, Slovak National Gallery, Gallery of the city of Prague, the Andy Warhol Foundation.
