Sport for Jove presents
By William Shakespeare

“…a pound of flesh…nearest his heart…so says the bond…”

A classic story of friendship, forbidden love, cunning disguises and a trial scene, award-winning theatre company Sport for Jove bring Shakespeare’s most controversial comedy to life on stage.

What would you give up for love? Already deep in debt to his best friend, Bassanio requires just one more loan to finance his scheme to woo and win the wealthy heiress Portia. But with Antonio’s capital all tied up in foreign trade, the two friends turn to the villainous moneylender Shylock.

This must-see production will act as a perfect introduction to the Bard for students and delight Shakespeare fans!

Teachers, further enhance your student’s experience by adding The Merchant of Venice HSC Symposium to your booking! See the ‘HSC Symposium’ tab for full details.

Further enhance your student’s experience by adding The Merchant of Venice HSC Symposium to your booking!

Sport for Jove’s HSC Symposiums are essential opportunities to deepen your students’ practical understanding of HSC texts.

Presented as a lecture interspersed with scene work and expert commentary from Sport for Jove’s Artistic Director Damien Ryan and his team, these symposiums will help you and your students explore famous scenes and speeches from The Merchant of Venice in multiple ways, open up diverse critical readings, and unlock language and character. You will also get the opportunity to hear professional actors discuss the ambiguities and challenges of the play, and answer student questions.

This symposium is a complete, hands-on experience of the plays action and narrative. Sport for Jove extracts the key ingredients and critical thinking required to write on The Merchant of Venice under exam conditions. Every aspect of the work is geared towards the curriculum and the specific needs of students studying this play.

Detailed student notes are also offered with the symposium. We recommend that you bring your lunch to eat between the performance and symposium.

“…incredibly valuable.” – Megan Duong, English and Languages Coordinator, Regents Park Christian School

“My students are now very enthusiastic to commence their study of Hamlet. They loved the symposium: the actors, their performances and your insights.” – Deb McWatters, English Teacher, Penrith Christian School
