MAPPLETHORPE

Emmy and BAFTA nominee, Matt Smith (Doctor Who, The Crown) gives a charismatic and sexy performance as Robert Mapplethorpe, gay icon of the late 20th Century, in this compelling biopic.

Award-winning documentarian Ondi Timoner (Dig!) charts Mapplethorpe’s evolution from his days as a struggling artist on the streets of New York, to his eventual fame as an acclaimed photographer of meticulously composed still lives and studies of the nude (mostly male) human form.

The film explores the intersection of Mapplethorpe’s art and sexuality most notably in the artist’s confronting and erotically charged depictions of New York’s underground BDSM scene of the 1970s and 80s. These images shocked the world, and brought gay subcultures out of the darkness and into the world of fine art.

Mapplethorpe is a provocative and unmissable tribute to the life and loves of an artist at the height of his craft, before his untimely passing.
