New Production! Superstars Jonas Kaufmann and Bryn Terfel return to the Paris Opera with Alvis Hermanis’ new staging of this forceful ‘légende dramatique’, the first of a Berlioz cycle which is to continue over several seasons. Goethe’s story of a man who sells his soul to the devil fascinated the composer, and as if swept away, Berlioz became as one with his eventual creation. The voice that invokes an “immense, impenetrable and proud nature” is entirely his own, its extraordinary breadth transcending traditional forms to become a symphonic and operatic dream. Philippe Jordan conducts.
