FORM Dance Projects and Riverside Theatres present
Dance Bites 2022
by Eliza Cooper

Bat Lake by Eliza Cooper is a dance work celebrating the dark, theatrical world of bats. From pollination to echolocation, the work exposes their nocturnal escapades usually hidden in the shadows. Bat Lake transforms the performance space as elegant beasts glide swiftly across a twilight stage. The work aims to bare these misunderstood creatures, bring their complex characters to life and reveal what lies beneath their mystique.

Directed by Eliza Cooper and choreographed in collaboration with Mitchell Christie, Allie Graham, Maxine Carlisle and Strickland Young. Featuring an original composition by Mason Peronchik and costumes by Eliza Cooper.

Eliza Cooper wishes to acknowledge the support of DirtyFeet during the development of Bat Lake. This project has been made possible through the support and assistance of Ausdance NSW, March Dance, Campbelltown Arts Centre, Creative Plus Business, Create NSW, Sidney Myer Fund & The Myer Foundation, The Nest Creative Space and Martyn Thompson.

Dance Bites is FORM Dance Projects’ curated signature program of dance works produced by some of Australia’s most innovative and exciting independent choreographers and companies. Dance Bites celebrates the diversity of contemporary dance making. Learn the Repertoire, See the Show offers dance students an opportunity to learn from each of the Dance Bites performances in a workshop led by the presenting artist(s). Alongside the workshop, students experience a matinee performance and post-show Q&A with the artistic team.

The workshop will be led by Callum Mooney and Eliza Cooper. It will begin with a stretch and warm up facilitated by the two artists, followed by learning repertoire from both works. Students can expect to learn and explore animalistic movements and phrases that involve basic floor work used in Bat Lake as well as a blend of movement styles, isolations, and visual imagery used in Cosmos.

According to the exemption under the public health order (COVID 19 Restrictions on Gathering and Movement) Order (No 7) 2020 (NSW) under the Public Health Act 2010 (NSW), issued on February 1 2021, organised groups who enter a premises as part of a school, child care, aged care or disability group are not required to provide the premises with contact details of every person in their group. This is subject to the following conditions:

  • It is duty of the group organiser (teacher or carer) to keep an electronic record of the entire group and their contact details for 28 days after the event.
  • The group organiser must provide the premises (Riverside Theatres) with at least two contacts to make available to NSW Health.
