Rosita Vai is a creative artist. She is of Sāmoan heritage and proudly represents her parents’ villages, Saleaula and Saleaumua. She was the first & only woman to be crowned New Zealand Idol, winning in 2005. Rosita’s resume includes a New Zealand Music Award for Best Selling Single, a nomination for Best Female Artist at the Pacific Music Awards 2006 and 2016, top 20 success and collaborations with some of New Zealand’s most talented musicians.
Now an independent artist, she writes songs that fuse her love of poetry, hiphop, soul and gospel. In 2015, she released her debut EP, Everything’s Rosie. The singer/songwriter draws influences from all walks of life but mainly from her own experiences. A testimony that emphasises Faith, Love and Hope.
Rosita also treads the boards and has featured in stellar productions of Jesus Christ Superstar and Little Shop of Horrors by Aōtearoa/New Zealand’s leading theatre company, Auckland Theatre Company (ATC). She spent the majority of 2014 globetrotting in the ensemble cast of The Factory – a powerful story about migration, performing to sell-out audiences, including the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland.
Now living in western Sydney, Rosita played a lead role in Satiu Studio’s Breaking Bread (2021) & A Day in the Life of… (2022) and Pelesasa Pics’ Deity (2021) & Moni (2025). She performed at Creative Australia’s Asia Pacific Arts Awards in 2024 at Riverside Theatres. She was featured in Mana Moana – performing with the Signature Choir & the Sydney Symphony at the sold-out Australian premiere at the Sydney Opera House in 2025.
In 2025, Rosita collaborated with the Australian Chamber Orchestra & Club Weld, working on a music program for neurodiverse artists curated by the team at the Arts & Cultural Exchange, Parramatta. Rosita also founded Penina Creatives, an organisation dedicated to using music to help young people tell their story and to help them through personal struggles in life.
