Waiting for the Fall

Venue Lennox Theatre
Dates 23 July 2016

Dir: Joud Saeed I 2015 I Syria

In a small village in Syria, the impending American air attacks are the talk of the day. The villagers keep each other informed of the latest rumours as the attacks could start at any moment. At the same time there is much excitement about a major volleyball match by the local ladies’ team. The civil war comes closer as one of the villagers, a war photographer, is taken prisoner by the rebels. With a mixture of slapstick satire and poignant scenes, this film captures the surreal atmosphere of life in war-torn Syria.

Hind’s Dream

Dir: Suzannah Mirghani I 2014 I Qatar

Hind’s Dream is a story that reflects the history, modernity, and folklore of the Arab Gulf states. Hind is a Bedouin girl who spends weeks alone in the tent as her husband hunts. In a tangled landscape of dream and reality, she recounts a strange dream about wandering alone in the desert, meeting an old oracle and glimpsing a future desert city. Beneath the barren desert of Hind’s reality the thick black matter of her subconscious is brewing – and just like the bubbling oil in the gas fields around her, it rises to the surface of this dreamscape.
