THE ELDER ONE

The disappearance of Mulla’s older brother, Akbar, looms large over life in beautiful Lakshadweep. After braving the seas to find him, young Mulla is plunged headlong into the harsh realities of Mumbai’s red light district and a fateful encounter with drug-addicted gangster, Bhai.

In the past, a tender but forbidden love affair unfolds between Akbar and Aamar, a mute islander on the verge of an arranged marriage. The Elder One audaciously blends social realism and magic realism; sexuality and gender identity; gay romance and crime-thriller, to startling effect.

Matthew Warchus directs Andrew Scott (BBC’s Sherlock, Fleabag) in Noël Coward’s provocative comedy Present Laughter. A giddy and surprisingly modern reflection on fame, desire and loneliness.
