SHARP SHORT THEATRE 2020
Now in its fifth year, Sharp Short Theatre is a chance for young writers, directors and performers to showcase their stories on Riverside’s stage and learn from industry mentors.
All entries perform in a heat. The best pieces are invited to perform in the final where students are awarded prizes in categories including best script, best direction, best performance and best overall production. Plays come from all theatrical genres including comedy, documentary, suspense, period, drama and fantasy, giving students a chance to play to their strengths and interests and let their imaginations run wild!
Entries must be written and directed by students (18 years and under) and can be up to a maximum of 10 minutes in duration. Entries must be submitted by a producer, for example a parent, teacher or responsible adult. Our 2019 prize sponsors included Riverside’s National Theatre of Parramatta, Australian Theatre for Young People, Belvoir, Currency Press, Playwave, Shopfront Arts Coop, Sydney Opera House and Sydney Theatre Company.
What are you waiting for? Get writing and register now! Entries close Friday 8 May 2020 at 5pm.
Come and support our budding future stars as they perform live on stage!
FYI Wednesday 17 June at 7:30pm has been allocated as a G Rated Heat. All entries in this heat will be suitable for families and young children. All other heats will be reasonably suitable for general audiences, but may contain coarse language and mature themes. Content advice will be provided on the programs.

SUITABLE FOR YEARS 3 – 12
(Stages 2 – 6)
From the Program Coordinator…
This event is a gem as it provides a rare opportunity for students to perform their original work in a professional venue with the help of professional mentors, stage managers and technical staff. The transformative power of students having agency over their creations is such a delight to witness. Sharp Short Theatre is a must for students interested in performing arts, creative writing or leadership (as the students are directors of their work too). If you have been thinking of dipping your toes into a participatory drama production, this is a great place to start.
