Beyond the Square‘s outreach program aims to work with those in the community that may find it difficult to access the Beyond ABBA program or are wanting a more specialised program within their service/school.
The Blue Grotto Project
In 2011 Beyond the Square’s Creative Director Alison Richardson and filmmaker Tim Baines led 16 workshops in filmmaking at the Les Powell School in Mt Pritchard. The students learnt how to use video cameras and shot all the footage that formed the final three films. The workshops were all based on the theme Water’ and activities included submerging cameras in their hydrotherapy pool, fishing for plastic fish in wading pools, blowing paper boats across water, creating underwater seascapes in fish tanks and drawing chalk drawings of ocean animals.
Sound designer Peter Kennard composed sound tracks for the films based on sound collected from the students throughout the project, and inflatable artist Marty Jay designed and constructed an inflatable grotto inside which the films were projected. The final result was an immersive, sensorial experience for all the students, teachers and parents that entered the grotto.
The aim is for the grotto to be used in other schools and services and for students and service users to contribute to the content through filmmaking workshops.
The Blue Grotto project was made possible through ArtsNSW ConnectED Artists in Residence program.
