Riverside Theatres presents

Maya The Bee Movie

Venue Raffertys Theatre
Dates 29 September 2016

Buzz into Riverside these school holidays and come on an adventure with Maya as she discovers that sometimes the smallest things make the biggest difference!

Maya the Bee, based on the children’s novel beloved by generations, is now buzzing with new excitement as this fantastically funny and family-friendly film!

Maya is a little bee with a big heart. While most bees believe that other insects should be feared, Maya can’t help but make friends with Flip the violin-playing grasshopper, Kurt the dung beetle and even Sting, a young hornet. This group of “fearsome” friends causes some bees to avoid Maya. But when the Queen’s royal jelly is stolen, it will take Maya and all of her bug buddies to figure out who did it and how to save the day!

Starring Jacki Weaver, Richard Roxburgh, Noah Taylor, Justine Clarke, Miriam Margolyes, Shane Dundas and David Collins aka ‘the Umbilical Brothers’ with Kodi Smit-McPhee and introducing Coco Jack Gillies as Maya.

Meet the Characters

Maya is a little bee with a big personality! Born into a well-ordered society of worker bees, Maya dreams of an exciting life of freedom, fun and adventure. For Maya, the world is simply far too interesting to stay inside the hive. Maya isn’t like other bees! A non conformist by nature, Maya is exuberant, enthusiastic and above all, curious. Maya’s sense of wonder and charm gives her an irresistible energy that soon wins over her staunchest critics and inspires other bees to live a joyful life.

Willi is Maya’s best friend and devoted sidekick. A natural goofball, Willi is certainly not the sharpest buzzer in the hive. His caution is a useful counterpoint to Maya’s impulsive nature. In fact, Willi is the only bee who can make her reconsider her decisions. Above all things, Willi is a sensitive little bee with a big heart who wants nothing more than to hang out with his best friend and enjoy the finer things in life… like pollen!

A disciplinarian of the highest order, Buzzlina Von Beena is the Queen’s Royal Advisor and official hive rule maker. Buzzlina does not tolerate disobedience…especially from an unruly troublemaker named Maya! Her thirst for control is only eclipsed by her desire for power – and she will not stop until she claims the top position!

Flip is a vagabond grasshopper, experiencing all the fruits that life has to offer at his own pace. A lover of all things musical, Flip lives happily and freely in the meadow and he is the bug that all the other meadow bugs look up to. Maya is instantly drawn to him and yearns to live her own life with the same kind of freedom.

Crawley is the devoted sidekick of the Royal Advisor. A bumbling, nervous creature, Crawley often innocently mistakes Buzzlina’s orders for something much less sinister. Secretly he doesn’t agree with her evil plans to take control, but he would NEVER voice his opinion and instead finds himself carrying out her orders at all times…

Miss Cassandra is the kind and nurturing hive school teacher. Loved by all the baby bees for her patience and gentleness, she immediately falls in love with her newest student, Maya. From this little bee, Miss Cassandra quickly learns that not all rules are meant to be followed – even if it means going against the Royal Advisor herself.

Sting is an eager and energetic little hornet with a tough exoskeleton. He is a sworn rival to the bees (or so his Dad tells him). Initially Sting’s family influence causes him to judge Maya based on her ‘bee’ness, but Maya quickly breaks down his prejudice with her huge heart. These two little bugs will show even their toughest opponents that bees and hornets really can be friends.

Hank is Sting’s Dad; a rough-as-guts Hornet, leader of his tribe and the biggest bee-hater of all. Pig headed and more than a little self-assured, Hank comes on strong but is secretly a big softie. In spite of his brash exterior, he really just wants what’s best for his little bug-a-lugs, Sting.

Arnie and Barney are a pair of accident-prone army ant misfits.  Despite their eager intentions, their bumbling antics cause constant grief for the Ant Colonel and their troop.  On learning that a pair of baby bees are missing (and with no other soldiers to send), the Ant colonel will reluctantly dispatch Arnie and Barney on a search and rescue mission…with hilariously silly results!

The Queen Bee is the kindly and benevolent sovereign of the hive. Wise and compassionate, the Queen recognises a uniqueness in Maya that most bees take for disobedience. Maya instantly has a connection with the Queen, who is one of the few bees in the hive to show her kindness.
