Khowaj Khizr er Sinduk
The Ark of Khowaz Khizir or Changta Habib’s dreams chronical of Immortality.
In its milestone 10th year, the South Asian Theatre Mela evolved into a vibrant, multidisciplinary celebration of South Asian aesthetics, right in the heart of Parramatta. In partnership with Riverside Theatres, our long-standing presenting partner, Nautanki Theatre proudly presents a dynamic program that honours community, culture, and creativity.
The word Mela means “fair,” a gathering that unites people, and our programming reflects that inclusive, festive spirit.
This year’s highlights include two performances of “KaMeeNi” by Abida Malik, staged in the Lennox Theatre. This powerful new work was commissioned through Nautanki’s Drama~Sutra playwriting initiative.
We’re thrilled to welcome the Lokojog Collective from Bangladesh, presenting “Khowaj Khizr er Sinduk” (The Ark of Khowaj Khizr), as part of Nautanki’s growing international collaboration and diaspora-focused language development work.
A heartfelt tribute will be paid to the legendary Pakistani television icon Uzma Gillani, with a screening of her acclaimed telefilm “Dhoopjali” (دھوپ جلی), followed by a special live appearance. We’re also honoured to recognise Avijit Sarkar, one of Sydney’s most versatile artists, as he marks 50 years of creative contribution.
The celebration continues outdoors with free courtyard events, including a drag performance, book launch, writer’s talk, folk music, open mic, and live band. There’ll also be kids’ music sessions, foyer activations, and a visual arts exhibition to complete the festive atmosphere.
Join us for this one-of-a-kind celebration. This is Parramatta’s premier annual South Asian cultural event. Don’t miss it!
