Arab Film Festival 2013

The 10th Arab Film Festival Australia will share the stories and culture of the Arab world with the Australian audience when it screens an impressive program of 6 Feature films and 5 Short films from 10 countries. The Festival will run from 27 June to 14 July 2013, opening in Sydney then followed by a tour to Canberra and Melbourne.

Growing side by side with the international renaissance of Arab screen culture and film production, the Arab Film Festival Australia showcases the resurgence of Arab film-making and storytelling by screening high quality films that would not otherwise be seen by Australian audiences. The Festival thus provides an invaluable regional, state and national platform for these films to be seen.

The Arab Film Festival Australia aims to address contemporary misrepresentations of Arab peoples and cultures by reflecting the complexity and diversity of Arab experiences, and providing a critical space presenting alternative representations of Arab subjects, cultures and narratives on screen. A community-managed cultural event, the Festival supports freedom of thought, expression and information, as well as diversity of screen media to enable democratic cultural expression to flourish.

This year we celebrate the 10th edition of the Arab Film Festival Australia, having begun in 2001 at the Roxy Theatre in Parramatta. The Festival remains as culturally current and vital now as it was then. While Arabic is still the second most-spoken language in NSW after English (Census 2011), it continues to retain a marginal place in the culture of the state. The Festival addresses this under-representation by amplifying the voices and visions of Arab film-makers via a multilingual festival bringing inspired Arab stories from around the world to life on Australian screens.
