THE SORRY MUM PROJECT
by Pippa Ellams

A witty observation on life, empathy, regret and reconciliation that takes us on a journey from the Fairfield RSL to the Moulin Rouge.

Pippa comes from a showbiz family. Her father was a cabaret star and her mother, Barbara, was a showgirl. But Pippa, like so many of us, loses sight of the person that is her Mum. This show goes to redress the balance, with an apology to her Mum and everyone’s Mum, who often becomes invisible once children arrive.

If you’re a Mum or daughter, or somebody’s child, this work will resonate.

LET ME KNOW WHEN YOU GET HOME – World Premiere
by Miranda Aguilar

Where do you turn when it turns out no place fits?

Val, a Filipinx teenager, is desperate to escape the purgatory period between high school and university so she can finally
be seen as an adult. She makes a break from her religious, overbearing mother and childhood best friend, then sets out to the city in search of the queer community she lacks back home in Fairfield. When she joins a Mardi Gras parade group and meets Prince, an enigmatic, older artist, Val is sure she has finally found her utopia – even if it means leaving her best friend, Thi, behind.

Let Me Know When You Get Home is a new, coming-of-age Australian play, deconstructing the myth of needing to “escape” Western Sydney. It draws from personal experience with suburban isolation and Filipino diasporic identity to create a work which explores the inner lives of isolated people and the discomfort that exists when no place fits. Let Me Know When You Get Home is a personal narrative on birth and chosen families, friendships and first loves, and ultimately, the universal desire to make a home in other people.

Launchpad is a double bill of new work developed under the visionary auspices of the National Theatre of Parramatta.

The material is whip smart and, by the end, finds an authenticity that will move anyone who has been a mother, or had a mother. (TSMP)

Let Me Know… is a delicately observed portrait of friendships and desires directed by Valerie Berry.

–  Harriet Cunningham – Sydney Morning Herald

The future of Australia’s Theatre is in good hands if the National Theatre of Parramatta’s Launchpad double-bill is anything to go by.

LMKWGH explores a refreshing side of the Asian queer experience.

– The Plus Ones

Ellams’ script moves along well and takes us all the way from Fairfield to the Moulin Rouge in Paris. There will be more than one mother and daughter in the audiences for whom this play will resonate.

The performances are excellent, and endearing. Demillo’s Val is vulnerable, personable as well as doggedly determined and Misa’s Prince is a scene stealer, even without his wonderfully outrageous clothing.

Aguilar gives the characters some succinct dialogue…The writing is strong…

It’s a phrase front-of-mind for many of us, especially at the moment; it’s also a brand new play about friendship and self-discovery by Miranda Aguilar, showing this week at Parramatta’s Riverside Theatre. We chat to Miranda about their inspiration for the work (and title), growing up in Western Sydney, and the change they’d like to see in local theatre this year. Plus, we catch up with cast member and interdisciplinary artist Tommy Misa about their earliest memories of performance, the importance of reclaiming PoC narratives in Sydney’s queer histories, and the performers and mentors who have shaped their practice.

Let Me Know When You Get Home is premiering at Riverside Theatre in Parramatta from Thursday 18 March – Saturday 20 March. For tickets and info, head to riversideparramatta.com.au.
