Meet The Designer : Emma Vine
August 10, 2018
Emma is a production designer with a Bachelor of Dramatic Art in Design from NIDA, she has worked on a number of productions as Set Designer and Costume Designer. Her recent credits include The Sugar House (Belvoir St); the feature film SLAM (2018); Antony and Cleopatra (Bell Shakespeare); Muriel’s Wedding: The Musical (Sydney Theatre Company).
Emma is the Set & Costume Designer on our upcoming production Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam adapted by Stevie Rodgers and directed by Darren Yap. We had a chat to her about the play, her career and industry insights.
What attracted you to this play?
Having a jolly good afternoon talking about grief over a few martini’s with Darren Yap.
What do you think audiences can take away from it?
Sadness. Lots of sadness. And then hopefully a heated conversation in the foyer about ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ expressions of love.
Have you worked with Darren Yap before?
I have never worked with Darren before – we met in passing in a foyer once before and I’d heard around the traps that he’s delightful – The Rumours Are True!
What is your relation/connection to Western Sydney? Have you worked or lived in Western Sydney before?
I grew up in Campbelltown. Growing the arts scene in the Western Suburbs is mighty important. Having live performance opportunities in the local area encourages an audience that quite rightly don’t fancy that trek to the CBD.
What are some of your most recent works, including theatre/TV/film/other?
The Sugar House – Belvoir – Costume Design
SLAM – Feature film – Art Department
The Maids – Belvoir 25a – Set and Costume Design
The Overcoat – Belvoir 25a – Set and Costume Design
What advice would you give to up and coming/emerging talents looking to further their careers.
Bread is free if you get it out of a bin
Is there anything about yourself that you would like to share with us?
Mate, get me started rambling about gender or arts funding and, it may not be overly eloquent but golly the eye contact will be intense.
