Sydney Youth Orchestras launches 2017 Auditions with the new Western Sydney Youth Orchestra

Sydney Youth Orchestras today announced the launch of its 2017 Audition registrations for young musicians aged 6-25 years. In 2017 for the first time, talented young musicians will have the opportunity to participate in SYO’s Western Sydney Youth Orchestra, based at Riverside Theatres.

Supported by Founding Partners Fort Street Capital with Dixon Advisory, and Riverside Theatres, the Western Sydney Youth Orchestra opens a new door for young musicians in the region. Parramatta is Sydney’s second CBD, with transport links making it accessible to participants from all over the city. WSYO will be led by esteemed orchestral educator James Pensini and will provide an unmatched educational opportunity for musicians across Greater Western Sydney.

SYO CEO Yarmila Alfonzetti said:

SYO is thrilled to launch high quality orchestral training in Western Sydney and meet the growing demand for this type of participatory arts learning in the area. Young Western Sydney musicians might have been dissuaded from auditioning for SYO because of the distance, so we have decided to bring an orchestra to them.

We know for a fact that one of the most significant barriers to participation in classical music is distance. I am proud that SYO will incorporate this new orchestra as part of its core business.

Sydney Youth Orchestras is the leading orchestral training organisation in NSW. For 44 years, it has nurtured some of Australia’s finest musicians including Richard Tognetti, Guy Noble and Claire Edwardes.

In 2017 SYO will provide weekly orchestral training for young musicians across 12 ensembles. Beyond equipping emerging artists for careers as professional musicians, the SYO program teaches teamwork, discipline, leadership and a commitment to excellence. Whatever career path these talented young people follow, they are likely to become leaders in and contributors to their community.
